Do You Know the Difference - Winter Tires vs. All Season Tires

Would you wear sandals throughout the winter?

Sounds like a silly question, doesn't it? Of course you wouldn't. Not in New England anyway. Winter boots are a definite prerequisite for the frigid, snowy days in the Northeast.

So if you're outfitting yourself in winter footwear, why aren't you doing the same for your Audi?

If you have a 4WD or AWD vehicle, you might believe you're equipped for our infamous winter roads. Or, if you have all season tires, you think it's all systems go for the harsh winter road conditions we're bound to experience.

Not true. And here's why...

All season tires are built to handle a variety of road conditions but not winter weather. They provide only minimal traction and much shorter braking distances. Winter tires are built specifically to perform in winter conditions like cold temperatures, ice, slush, and snow. With winter tires you can feel the difference in acceleration, braking, and handling. They offer better traction that all season tires simply cannot compete with.

The tread compound of all season tires can harden in low temperatures, so there's less traction between the road and your tires. A winter tire's tread is made of a much softer compound, so it remains pliable in below freezing temperatures, which helps you maintain control even in hazardous conditions.

A few other recommendations:
  • While winter tires are an essential part of your vehicle in the cold weather, don't short-change your Audi by purchasing only two winter tires. It is strongly recommended you purchase four winter tires to ensure even wear and optimum performance and safety.
  • Winter tires should not be used year round as they will wear out faster in the summer; you should always return to all-season tires in the spring and summer.
