The 2018 Audi RS3—An Evocative, Wild, and Nuanced Performance Sedan That Was Worth the Wait

It’s been a year since we learned that the Four Rings was changing the name of its performance division from “Quattro GmbH” to “Audi Sport.” But while getting used to new nomenclature was one facet of the change, it also came with the news that eight new RS models would debut over the next eighteen months. A year later, and we’ve been treated to an avalanche of RennSport goodness, ranging from the TT RS to the topic of today’s blog—the evocative and potent 2018 Audi RS3.

The RS3 is one of the many examples of a car American drivers have wanted for years, but have never been given. But along with that shake-up at Audi Sport came a willingness to not just offer RennSport models on our shores, but develop them specifically for our market. That’s part of what makes the 2018 RS3 such a sweet prospect: after years of pining, it isn’t just ours, but it was made for us.

That’s a good thing, too, because the all-new RS3 doesn’t just compliment the uncompromising identity of the A3 family of which it’s a part. It’s the first of its ilk to wear the sport division’s new styling as inspired by the brand’s long rally car heritage, and instead of an iron-block turbocharged inline-five with 335 horses, we get the same engine with a light-weight aluminum block, the same cylinder count, and 400 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque.

When compared to its S3 sibling, it becomes clearer just how insane the RS3 is. Its compliment of 120 additional horsepower and a 3.9 second 0-60 sprint certainly make it quicker, but enthusiasts will be quick to point out speed is just one facet of this car’s very specific set of skills. Sport-tuned quattro all-wheel drive, Audi magnetic ride, Drive Select, and RS-specific Electronic Stabilization Control.

But even its AWD system stands apart. On models like the A4, which can send up to 85 percent of its power aft and 70 percent forward, or drive with an optimum 40/60 split front to back, the RS3 has no pre-set for how much power it distributes. Instead, on-board computers send as much power to the back axles as is deemed necessary. Sent through a rear differential capable of handling up to 1,475 lb-ft of torque, one thing is clear: the definition of necessity in this case is entirely subjective.
